2 to be allowed: no se permite cantar, singing is not allowed
3 (un gasto) no puedo permitirme comprar ese coche, I can't afford to buy that car
¿To allow, to let o to permit?
The teacher doesn't allow/permit us to smoke in class. The teacher doesn't allow/permit smoking in class. Smoking is not allowed. To let necesita un complemento y el infinitivo sin to: El profesor no nos deja fumar en clase. The teacher doesn't let us smoke in class. No se usa en voz pasiva. ➣ Ver nota en let.
' permitirse' also found in these entries: Spanish: permitir - poco English: afford - liberty - treat - indulge
